Death be to the translation - Vernacular advertising comes into its own
Ukhozi FM has the highest listenership in the country. And the other vernac stations aren't too far behind. Clever and relevant vernac ads are key, now more than ever and brands need to realise the opportunities that lie in speaking with their markets in a way they can identify with - humour, insights, etc.Posted on 23 Nov 2009 11:21

The search for research - Vernacular advertising comes into its own
Brands need to engage in some sort of search for insights into the consumers that they want to reach, because not all black people went to school in the North or South of Joburg. Does the fact that brands refuse to speak the language of consumers still marginalise some people like the previous government? Of course it does, if you refuse to learn someone's language, you are effectively rejecting them, a big mistake on the part of most brands.Posted on 23 Nov 2009 11:07

Amazing - Vernacular advertising comes into its own
I really like what Kamogelo Sesing had to say about black advertising. Hopefully brands like Rama will read this article and be inspired before coming out with stupid Rama Mama ads that don't speak to average mama's in the township.Posted on 23 Nov 2009 10:41

not so Joyful -  [OrnicoAd]
i agree, the joy campaign is not a great fit at all for a dynamic brand, joy belongs to babies, dairy or some other small car brands.. BM is dynamic decisive and influencing.. not joy!!Posted on 23 Nov 2009 10:27
Lots of work that feels meaningless -  [OrnicoAd]
There is so much work coming out of MTN, but non of it seems to resonate. Yes, the imagery works, but what do you want me to know about MTN? I just don't know. Ayoba smoba!

OK, I am not the market, but is this doing MTN any good? Is it gaining loyalty and market share, or is it making MTN feel warm and wet?Posted on 23 Nov 2009 10:16

Disconnect -  [OrnicoAd]
The problem with all this "philosophical" bank advertising is that it doesn't relate to anybody's experience of local banking, with shoddy service levels and exorbitant fees. So it feels hypocritical and forced. It's just another dodgy retail bank, not the United Nations. Do something good instead.Posted on 22 Nov 2009 11:05

Real communication -  [OrnicoAd]
For once something that doesn't feel like "advertising". A simple and effective story that is well-told.Posted on 22 Nov 2009 11:00
Other reasons?
Maybe people are switching content providers... - 'Worst three months for newspapers' circulation
... can't we get any more insight than "this follows international trends..."? Why did this article forget to mention the why? Are people getting their news from other sources - BBC's website was once viewed as a threat to some British newspapers. And what about social media and it's ability for espresso size news briefs? Then, don't forget SA DSTV audiences (the same people who read "serious" daily and weekly papers) looking for their hit of news, can now just as easy flick on the telly and get a wrap of the latest local headlines - 24 hours a day. TV and newspapers may not be in direct medium competition, but they certainly are content wise.Posted on 22 Nov 2009 02:20
